Author: Tom Brokaw

“Tom Brokaw arrived in Washington as the rising young star of broadcast news just as the presidency of Richard Nixon was collapsing. Brokaw has intertwined his own story with Nixon’s in a way that is readable, revealing, and always fascinating.”—Evan Thomas, author of Being Nixon   Tom Brokaw is the author of seven bestsellers: The Greatest Generation, The Greatest Generation Speaks, An Album of Memories, A Long Way from Home, Boom!, The Time of Our Lives, and A Lucky Life Interrupted. A native of South Dakota, he graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in political science. He began his journalism career in Omaha and Atlanta before joining NBC News in 1966. Brokaw was the White House correspondent for NBC News during Watergate, and from 1976 to 1981 he anchored Today on NBC. He was the sole anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw from 1983 to 2005. In 2008 he anchored Meet the Press for nine months following the death of his friend Tim Russert. He continues to report for NBC News, producing long-form documentaries and providing expertise during breaking news events. Brokaw has won every major award in broadcast journalism, including two duPonts, two Peabody Awards, and several Emmys. In 2014, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He lives in New York and Montana.

Bestselling author Tom Brokaw brings readers inside the White House press corps in this up-close and personal account of the fall of an American president.

In August 1974, after his involvement in the Watergate scandal could no longer be denied, Richard Nixon became the first and only president to resign from office in anticipation of certain impeachment. The year preceding that moment was filled with shocking revelations and bizarre events, full of power politics, legal jujitsu, and high-stakes showdowns, and with head-shaking surprises every day. As the country’s top reporters worked to discover the truth, the public was overwhelmed by the confusing and almost unbelievable stories about activities in the Oval Office.

Tom Brokaw, who was then the young NBC News White House correspondent, gives us a nuanced and thoughtful chronicle, recalling the players, the strategies, and the scandal that brought down a president. He takes readers from crowds of shouting protesters to shocking press conferences, from meetings with Attorney General Elliot Richardson and White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig, to overseas missions alongside Henry Kissinger. He recounts Nixon’s claims of executive privilege to withhold White House tape recordings of Oval Office conversations; the bribery scandal that led to the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew and his replacement by Gerald Ford; the firing of Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox; how in the midst of Watergate Nixon organized emergency military relief for Israel during the Yom Kippur War; the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court that required Nixon to turn over the tapes; and other insider moments from this important and dramatic period.

The Fall of Richard Nixon
allows readers to experience this American epic from the perspective of a journalist on the ground and at the center of it all.

Advance praise for The Fall of Richard Nixon

“A divided nation. A deeply controversial president. Powerful passions. No, it’s not what you’re thinking, but Tom Brokaw knows that the past can be prologue, and he’s given us an absorbing and illuminating firsthand account of how Richard Nixon fell from power. Part history, part memoir, Brokaw’s book reminds us of the importance of journalism, the significance of facts, and the inherent complexity of power in America.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Soul of America

Watergate revisited Tom Brokaw writes an easy read summary about Nixon's Watergate impeachment proceedings that forced Nixon to resign the presidencyIt does not break any new ground nor does it go into any detail Instead it's a light and entertaining rendition of Brokaws time as white house correspondentWatergate and Richard Nixon... Tom Brokaw’s new book, “The Fall of Richard Nixon”, is not a straight history of Nixon’s impeachment, but rather it’s collection of short chapters about Richard Nixon and the story around the Watergate scandal and his subsequent resignation. Brokaw begins his book with a question posted at the Nixon Presidential Library, “Who was Richard Nixon?”. He attempts to answer that question, but fails in the end, because I doubt if anyone, even Nixon himself, could have answered correctly.Tom Brokaw’s broadcasting career began in the late 1960’s. TV and newspapers were the main way we got our news in those days before the internet. Brokaw fit in to the NBC news organization. He was a go-getter and became friends with many politicians in Washington DC when he was there to cover; I was left wondering about the cozy dinner parties he and his wife went to and if they interfered with how he reported the news. He knew most of the politicians and news makers who were involved in first the probe of the crime at the Watergate and then the attempt at impeachment of Richard Nixon. Most of those readers of Brokaw’s book lived through the Nixon presidency and the Watergate era. We remember the old and now dead figures so important 45 years ago. Some - a few - are still around and they pop up on the cable shows to talk about what they remember from their Watergate days and how it relates to the current administration and their problems. Don’t Jill Wine Banks and Liz Holtzman look good for their ages? And hasn’t John Dean aged divinely? (I wonder what happened to Mo Dean and if she’s still wearing her pearl ear studs).Tom Brokaw combines yesterday and today in his book. And somehow, the Watergate scandal was evocative of a more innocent time than we’re going through now. Brokaw’s writing has always had a tinge of looking backward to see more honest and simple times; to use as a guide for dealing with today’s society. That was clearly apparent to me when I read this book.Selfies, cheese and crackers Tom Brokaw knows his Hors d oeuvres. This book, nominally about the end of the Nixon presidency, is actually a tray of vanilla-wafer-and-aerosol-cheese reminiscences, best suited to folks past sixty. Garnished with other personal anecdotes wrapped in gentle language about a fractious era, you just have to love Tom Brokaw.Perhaps not this book, though. The problem is, most of the events described and many of the people named are either unknown to — or long-forgotten by — most Americans. This slim volume is thus more of a scrap book with enhanced captions that assumes a prior familiarity with the subjects. It doesn’t work very well to just pluck them out of history’s dust and assume readers will bond with the narrative. You almost had to be there.I was. For example, Mr. Brokaw mentions a milestone date, July 24, 1974. It was the day the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Nixon had to turn over key tape recordings to the House Judiciary Committee then considering articles of impeachment. At the time, I worked across the street as a staffer for Senator George McGovern. That morning, pretending to be a member of the press, I angled my way into a Supreme Court kitchenette serving as a makeshift press room to snag a slip opinion explaining the decision. It remains a fixed and vivid memory for me but not one that matters much to anyone else. The same can be said of many episodes in Mr. Brokaw’s book. Nice writing. Congenial, modest narrator, yet sadly, adding up to something less than the purchase price.

Wild Game Free Pdf

ISBN: 1328519031
Title: Wild Game Pdf My Mother, Her Lover, and Me
Author: Adrienne Brodeur
Published Date: 2019
Page: 256

An Amazon Best Book of October 2019: When Adrienne Brodeur was fourteen years old, her mother entered her room to tell her “Ben Souther just kissed me.” Her mother wasn’t upset, despite the fact that Ben was not Adrienne’s stepfather. In fact, she was happy about it. This event sets off Brodeur’s memoir exploring her outwardly comfortable upbringing and the odd triangle that she, her mother, and Ben eventually created—the result is an engaging, at times breathless, read that builds in anticipation, even after that bang of a beginning. There is barely a wasted word in the book, and the tensions that develop between various members of the family, good or bad, recognized or not—as well the tensions we feel as readers—keep the narrative humming. It’s difficult to describe what makes one memoir more readable than another. But put this one at the top of your list.--Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

A daughter’s tale of living in the thrall of her magnetic, complicated mother, and the chilling consequences of her complicity.

On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was fourteen, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me.

Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend. The affair would have calamitous consequences for everyone involved, impacting Adrienne’s life in profound ways, driving her into a precarious marriage of her own, and then into a deep depression. Only years later will she find the strength to embrace her life—and her mother—on her own terms.

Wild Game is a brilliant, timeless memoir about how the people close to us can break our hearts simply because they have access to them, and the lies we tell in order to justify the choices we make. It’s a remarkable story of resilience, a reminder that we need not be the parents our parents were to us.

He is president of Pro-Knot, a company that publishes waterproof plastic knot cards for boaters, campers, survivalists, fishermen and anyone that finds themselves with a rope or line in hand, and has sold over one million of the popular knot card sets. Sherry is a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and lives in Bend Oregon with his wife and daughter, where he enjoys fly fishing, hiking, camping and boating.

By Pro-Knot, the number one trusted name in Knots.
This complete knot tying KIT includes everything you need to learn and practice how to tie 20 essential rope knots. The six card/twelve page waterproof plastic card set contains twenty best all purpose rope knots clearly illustrated and described, bound together with a no-rust brass grommet in the corner!

Use the included cordage and carabiner to practice tying knots with. You can learn to tie two ropes together with the two cords (24 inches each of high quality 3mm static line cordage which is higher quality than paracord and easier to tie and untie), learn to tie rope to an object (a hitch knot) with the included carabiner and of course use one cord to practice loop knots such as the Bowline.

With over one million knot cards sold, Pro-Knot is a highly respected and trusted name in knots. This Knot Tying Kit will help you learn to tie knots like a pro! Whether you are lashing down a kayak on the roof of your car (use the Trucker's Hitch), hanging an adjustable line in camp (use the Tautline Hitch), tying a boat to a dock (Cleat Hitch), or you just need a quick peek at the good old Bowline Knot while outdoors, the knot cards will serve you well. And being completely waterproof solid plastic means you can take them with you anywhere without worry - great for survival kits.

If a knot is on this card set, it is a proven, useful and trusted knot! These rope knots are universal for survival, boating, search and rescue, home and ranch, scouts, camping, paddle sports and any outdoor activity involving rope. There are step-by-step instructions for joining ropes together, tying rope to objects and making loops.

  • Waterproof solid plastic cards with no-rust brass grommet
  • 20 essential rope knots (see list of knots below)
  • Size: 3½ x 2¼ x 1/8 inch
  • Weighs less than one ounce.
  • Cords are 24 inches long (61cm) and are 3mm diameter.
  • Perfect for backpack, glove box, bug-out-bag or boat.

Twenty best knots include: Bowline, Square Knot, Water Knot (best knot for use with nylon webbing), Rolling Hitch, Clove Hitch, Sheet Bend (doubled version too), Trucker's Hitch (a must-know knot), Mooring Hitch, Cleat Hitch (boaters must-know knot), Tautline Hitch (adjustable knot), Buntline Hitch, Prusik Knot, Butterfly Knot, Half Hitch, Constrictor Knot, Double Fisherman's, Figure Eight, Bowline on a Bight, Sheep Shank, Timber Hitch. These knots will handle just about any rope tying situation. Designed in Bend Oregon.

Rope too short, quality questionable The ropes are much shorter and thinner than I thought they'd be. This makes it quite difficult to tie the more complex knots (like Sheepshank and Trucker's hitch). The other major issue is the quality. I've had the product for less than a week, and one of the ropes is already coming apart (see photo). I can't recommend this product due to the poor quality of the ropes. I have performed less than 100 knots with it and it's coming apart.Okay For Learning Most Basic Knots Explanatory cards and ropes are useful, but the ropes really should be of different diameters and a bit longer. For example, the Prusik Knot requires one line to be at least twice the diameter of the other. Likewise, you really need a cleat to practice a Cleat Hitch. The included D ring can be used to practice knots such as a Buntline Hitch.4 out of 6 purchased missing components. Terrible! I purchased 6 of these as gifts for family members. Of the 6 only 2 came with the carabiner, cards and both cords! The packaging is awful. Every one is partially open. The one missing the cards is taped shut and still missing the cards??!3 are missing the carabiner.1 is missing the cards.1 has only 1 out of 2 cords.

Meat Eater Free Pdf

ISBN: 0385529821
Title: Meat Eater Pdf Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter

“Truth be told, I have lived a life plenty comfortable with my disdain toward hunters and hunting.  And then along comes Steven Rinella and his revelatory memoir Meat Eater to ruin everything. Unless you count the eternal pursuit of the unmetered parking space, I am not a hunter. I am, however, on a constant quest for good writing. Meat Eater begins with a promise—'This book has a hell of a lot going for it, simply because it’s a hunting story'—and then delivers ceaselessly, like a Domino’s guy with O.C.D. This is survival of the most literate. Graphic, sure, but less so than an episode of ‘CSI,’ and with more believable emoting…this—genuine passion, humbly conveyed—is when nonfiction slaughters fiction and hangs it over its mantel. The text is relentlessly vivid and clear…the commitment, effort and ardor are unflinching. What Rinella does to prepare a muskrat trap when he’s in fifth grade takes five more steps and is infinitely more loving than whatever I did as a fifth grader to break in my baseball glove. With every chapter, you get a history lesson, a hunting lesson, a nature lesson and a cooking lesson, and most of the chapters end with 'tasting notes' on various game. … Readers will never ask themselves, 'What is he talking about?' The only question they might have is, 'Why isn’t this guy the head of the N.R.A.?'…  [A]gain and again, his descriptive powers trump gruesomeness…. Meat Eater offers an overabundance to savor.” —New York Times Book Review “As Steven Rinella is quick to point out, the hunting story is the oldest sort of story there is. Humans developed language, it is commonly held, to tell them. When told properly, as they are in Meat Eater, such stories are not simple gloats by the successful hunter around the table, proudly chewing on the biggest portion of meat and relishing the respect he has earned from his tribe by bringing back the protein. Rather, they are stories of man's relationships with his fellow hunters, his family, the land and the animals. The stories in Meat Eater are full of empathy and intelligence….In some sections of the book, the author's prose is so engrossing, so riveting, that it matches, punch for punch, the best sports writing. When Mr. Rinella wades into the surging Grand River, to throw a fly for steelheads, the story moves as well as Tom Callahan writing about Johnny Unitas in the 1958 championship or Bill Nack writing about Secretariat.” —Wall Street Journal “Relentlessly descriptive and endlessly evocative ‘tasting guides’ at the close of each chapter help armchair hunters get a sense of what it might be like digging into their own heaping plate of camp meat, deer hearts or sun-dried jerky…the writing is steadfastly satisfying and clear. The author wisely allows philosophical questions pertaining to the validity of hunting and the efficacy of state-enforced regulations to simmer in the background, and he effectively shows nature in all its glory…An insider’s look at hunting that devotees and nonparticipants alike should find fascinating.” —Kirkus   “On one level, [Rinella has] penned an entertaining collection of the sort of anecdotes that, if you had the good luck to meet him at a Brooklyn hipster’s cocktail party, would be conversational gold. Though animals figure almost as prominently in his narrative as people, Rinella is an astute observer, with an eye for delightfully telling details…But in Meat Eater, Rinella does more than tell stories well and share exotic cooking tips. He writes from the standpoint of a married writer and father living in one of the world’s more densely populated metropolises. His book sets up an implicit contrast between city and wilderness, semi-settled midlife and a more footloose young manhood.” —Paste   “For the typical urbanite, feeling disdain for gun owners is about as easy as broiling a boneless, shrink-wrapped chicken breast: They’re hicks. Red State rubes. Mowing down Bambi with their assault rifles. Meanwhile, we meander the supermarket aisles, poking around for grass-fed this or free-range that, floating in a cloud of ethical contradiction and denial. Without breaking it down this polemically, Steven Rinella, in his memoir, Meat Eater, rigorously describes his trajectory from unexamined to intensely reconstructed killer of wildlife, a progression that should assist the typical city slicker in replacing categorical dismissal with something more akin to nuanced understanding…It’s evident from Chapter 1 that we are in the hands of a seriously experienced hunter-gatherer and writer, which translates on most pages to very authentic-feeling reenactments of the hunt, including both its inherent vibrancy and distress. And critically, we witness Rinella’s evolving sense of what all this killing might mean. Acutely conveyed are the ways society is elbowing aside an age-old practice, often bloody and brutal, and replacing it with practices numbingly antiseptic and increasingly unreal. By the end, regardless of how you feel about guns or hunting, its appeal has ironically been made alive. It’s the perfect negative image of our pervasive technological moment — bracing, dangerous, and direct rather than mediated, packaged, and disassociated….Rinella’s writing is unerringly smart, direct, and sharply detailed…Each of his small-bore narratives, whether it unfolds on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Montana, Alaska, Arizona, or Mexico, bristles with the magic of a specific, authentic place.” —Boston Globe   “Chances are, Steven Rinella's life is very different than yours or mine. He does not source his food at the local supermarket. Meat Eater is a unique and valuable alternate view of where our food comes from—and what can be involved. It's a look both backward, at the way things used to be—and forward—to a time when every diner truly understands what's on the end of the fork.” —Anthony Bourdain   “If hunting has fewer participants and advocates than ever before, Rinella is doing his best to reverse the trend. He is informative, passionate, literary, funny, and well, cool. Perhaps what’s most remarkable about his work is that it offers readers who only ‘hunt’ at the local grocery store the opportunity to enjoy a vicarious adventure or two in the world of outdoor protein gathering…Rinella’s audience will continue to grow, based on his thoughtful writing.” —Booklist   “Woven into Rinella’s thoughtful prose detailing his outdoor adventures (or misadventures, in some cases) are historical, ecological, or technical observations dealing with the landscape, the animals, or the manner in which the game is harvested. Also, almost every chapter is finished with short ‘Tasting Notes’ that outline the culinary dos and don’ts for meat from game like squirrel, black bear, and mountain lion. Rinella has a passion for hunting and wilderness that comes across in his writing, and even if you don’t agree with his ideas on hunting lions with dogs or catch-and-release fishing you can’t help pondering the arguments he makes. And that seems to be the point of the book, to make you think—about your relationship with nature, about what you eat and why you eat it—and if that’s Rinella’s motivation, this book succeeds.” —Publishers Weekly In addition to being an expert chef known for working with wild game, Steven Rinella is an outdoorsman, writer, and television and podcast personality with an exceptional ability to communicate the hunting lifestyle to a wide variety of audiences. The host of the television show and podcast MeatEater, he is also the author of two volumes of The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game; Meat Eater: Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter; American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon; and The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine. His writing has appeared in many publications, including Outside, Field & Stream, The New Yorker, Glamour, The New York Times, Men’s Journal, Salon, O: The Oprah Magazine, Bowhunter, and the anthologies Best American Travel Writing and Best Food Writing.

“Revelatory . . . With every chapter, you get a history lesson, a hunting lesson, a nature lesson and a cooking lesson. . . . Meat Eater offers an overabundance to savor.”—The New York Times Book Review

Steven Rinella grew up in Twin Lake, Michigan, the son of a hunter who taught his three sons to love the natural world the way he did. As a child, Rinella devoured stories of the American wilderness, especially the exploits of his hero, Daniel Boone. He began fishing at the age of three and shot his first squirrel at eight and his first deer at thirteen. He chose the colleges he went to by their proximity to good hunting ground, and he experimented with living solely off wild meat. As an adult, he feeds his family from the food he hunts.

Meat Eater chronicles Rinella’s lifelong relationship with nature and hunting through the lens of ten hunts, beginning when he was an aspiring mountain man at age ten and ending as a thirty-seven-year-old Brooklyn father who hunts in the remotest corners of North America. He tells of having a struggling career as a fur trapper just as fur prices were falling; of a dalliance with catch-and-release steelhead fishing; of canoeing in the Missouri Breaks in search of mule deer just as the Missouri River was freezing up one November; and of hunting the elusive Dall sheep in the glaciated mountains of Alaska.

Through each story, Rinella grapples with themes such as the role of the hunter in shaping America, the vanishing frontier, the ethics of killing, the allure of hunting trophies, the responsibilities that human predators have to their prey, and the disappearance of the hunter himself as Americans lose their connection with the way their food finds its way to their tables. Hunting, he argues, is intimately connected with our humanity; assuming responsibility for acquiring the meat that we eat, rather than entrusting it to proxy executioners, processors, packagers, and distributors, is one of the most respectful and exhilarating things a meat eater can do.

A thrilling storyteller with boundless interesting facts and historical information about the land, the natural world, and the history of hunting, Rinella also includes after each chapter a section of “Tasting Notes” that draws from his thirty-plus years of eating and cooking wild game, both at home and over a campfire. In Meat Eater he paints a loving portrait of a way of life that is part of who we are as humans and as Americans.

Praise for Meat Eater

Very educational and amusing As woman in the world of hunting and a passionate cook, Steve brings both interests together in an entertaining, educational ,insightful, well-written book. I enjoyed the comparison he draws of his experiences with things many of his readers might be more familiar with and are quite amusing. The Tasting Notes were especially interesting to my culinary side. His recollections of his childhood adventures with his brothers rival the modern-day classic movie "Wild America". This I my second book by Steve, my first having been The Scavengers Guide to Haute Cuisine. It whet my appetite for more from this great ambassador of ethical hunting, and I'll be recommending his books in my local game-cooking classes. The importance of hunting I bought this book to read and as a gift. A great read and as a hunter who been hunting for over 40 years. Steven is the hunter, story teller and show “Meat Eater” that we’ve been waiting for. He explains the importance of hunting in our country. He doesn’t get lost in trophy hunting and scoring. He hunting to eat and he hunts where most of us can hunt. This is a book I challenge you to give to people who are against hunting and watch them open their minds to Steven. Thank-youGreat introductory piece to a present-day legend This book was my first exposure to Rinella. I must have missed out on the "The Wild Within" tv show, but now with his "Meateater" shows (which I truly wish were on Amazon Prime) and his "Meateater" podcast, not to mention the other books that he's written, I'm getting a lot of useful advice and smart, well-thought-out insights on a lot of different topics. This particular book consists of a lot of stories from Steve's life and really gives the reader an accurate portrayal of what makes Steve Steve. Three Days at the Brink Free Pdf

ISBN: 0062905686
Title: Three Days at the Brink Pdf FDR's Daring Gamble to Win World War II (Three Days Series)

“In his monumental new book about one of history’s most epic events, Bret Baier has outdone himself yet again. I could not put this extraordinary book down. Three Days at the Brink is a masterpiece: elegantly written, brilliantly conceived, and impeccably researched. This book not only sparkles but is destined to be a classic!” (JAY WINIK, New York Times bestselling author of 1944 and April 1865)“Riveting. With characteristic intellectual verve and brilliant analysis, Bret Baier allows readers to freshly understand how the Tehran Conference shaped world history. Essential reading by a first-rate storyteller!” (DOUGLAS BRINKLEY, professor of history at Rice Unviersity and author of American Moonshot and Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Land of America)“In this brisk, readable and compelling book, Bret Baier takes us into a crucial period of World War II and calls our attention to an important hinge of world history.” (MICHAEL BESCHLOSS, New York Times bestselling author of Presidents of War)“In the past three years, Bret Baier, perhaps America’s top newscaster, has become one of America’s best historians as well. Three Days at the Brink is a fascinating narrative that doubles as a political portrait of FDR and a history of the momentous Tehran conference. Must reading.” (DAVID EISENHOWER, Director, the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Public Service, and author of Eisenhower: At War, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History)“An exciting, moment by moment account of the Tehran Conference and its aftermath. Well-researched and highly readable.” (SELWA “LUCKY” ROOSEVELT, former Chief of Protocol for the Reagan Administration)“Fascinating and intriguing. Three Days at the Brink is a compelling account of FDR’s political life and career. This book, along with Bret Baier’s two prior works, distinguishes him as not only a renowned journalist but a superb storyteller and historian.  Americans can learn much from Bret Baier and his latest gem.” (MARK R. LEVIN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Unfreedom of the Press)“A fascinating story, dramatically written. … Baier recreates [the Tehran Conference] vividly.” (Booklist)“Highly readable. ... Dramatic. ... Compelling.” (Publishers Weekly) Bret Baier is the chief political anchor for Fox News Channel and the anchor and executive editor of Special Report with Bret Baier, seen five days a week on Fox News Channel. Before assuming the anchor role, Bret served as Chief White House Correspondent for Fox News Channel between 2006 and 2009. From the #1 bestselling author and award-winning anchor of Special Report with Bret Baier, comes the gripping lost history of the Tehran Conference, where FDR, Churchill, and Stalin plotted D-Day and the Second World War’s endgame. With the fate of World War II in doubt and rumors of a Nazi assassination plot swirling, Franklin Roosevelt risked everything at a clandestine meeting that would change the course of history.

November 1943: The Nazis and their Axis allies controlled nearly the entire European continent. Japan dominated the Pacific. Allied successes at Sicily and Guadalcanal had gained them modest ground but at an extraordinary cost. On the Eastern Front, the Soviet Red Army had been bled white. The path of history walked a knife’s edge.

That same month a daring gambit was hatched that would alter everything. The "Big Three"―Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin―secretly met for the first time to chart a strategy for defeating Adolf Hitler. Over three days in Tehran, Iran, this trio―strange bedfellows united by their mutual responsibility as heads of the Allied powers―made essential decisions that would direct the final years of the war and its aftermath. Meanwhile, looming over the covert meeting was the possible threat of a Nazi assassination plot, code-named Operation Long Jump.

Before they left Tehran, the three leaders agreed to open a second front in the West, spearheaded by Operation Overload and the D-Day invasion of France at Normandy the following June. They also discussed what might come after the war, including dividing Germany and establishing the United Nations―plans that laid the groundwork for the postwar world order and the Cold War.

Bestselling author and Fox News Channel anchor Bret Baier’s new epic history, Three Days at the Brink, centers on these crucial days in Tehran, the medieval Persian city on the edge of the desert. Baier makes clear the importance of Roosevelt, who stood apart as the sole leader of a democracy, recognizing him as the lead strategist for the globe’s future―the one man who could ultimately allow or deny the others their place in history.

With new details discovered in rarely seen transcripts, oral histories, and declassified State Department and presidential documents from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, Baier illuminates the complex character of Roosevelt, revealing a man who grew into his role and accepted the greatest challenge any American president since Lincoln had faced.

Great book, best of three Good book for people who like history andPresidents. Should be on the Ny times for many month or moreWell written. I have not completed reading this book yet. However I would like to say it reads more like a biography of President FDR for the first one hundred and some pages. It has provided me with information that I never knew about FDR.Major players in world history - an enjoyable read. Excellent read, I can't put the book down. I'm not a big history reader, but the way Bret writes about what the major world leaders' lives were like during those times is engaging. How those lives affected the world, then and now is fascinating. This is a prequel, so looking forward to reading the next 2 in his series.

She lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The complete edition of the bestselling children’s favorite, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, is now available as a Classic Board Book!

A told B
and B told C,
“I’ll meet you at the top
of the coconut tree.”
When all the letters of the alphabet race one another up the coconut tree, will there be enough room?
Of course there is always enough room for this rollicking alphabet chant that has been a children’s favorite for more than twenty years! Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault’s rhythmic text keeps the beat with Caldecott Honor illustrator Lois Ehlert’s bold, cheerful art. This winning combination has created a series of enduring Chicka Chicka favorites, and now, for the first time ever, the complete edition of the original Chicka Chicka Boom Boom story is available as a Classic Board Book. With sturdy pages and rounded corners, this portable edition of an irresistible alphabet romp will delight a new generation of young readers.

All Children will love this book and so will any adult who still has that little child still inside. If you have never read this book to a child, I would HIGHLY recommend it! It is an ABC book, but it is written so it rhymes from start to finish. The cadence you can easily achieve is fantastic! It's so much fun to read, and for ANYONE to enjoy. We bought this book for our grand children and these are for our great-grandchildren. The fun in these pages never diminishes. It is a classic! This board book isn't a heavily stripped down version of the original - packs a lot of fun, alphabet "bang for the buck"! Aren't youngsters learning to read today SO much younger than most people of my generation ever did? Still amazes me that our grandsons learned their letters with such lightning-fast speed (then again, so many of today's children's shows are educational, as opposed to the simply amusing cartoons we had.) Our 3 year old had already been quite proficient with his ABC's when we gave him this book on his birthday, but we'll get a "2-fer" out of it - a fun reinforcement for him that he'll begin to actually read with, and it'll be waiting in the wings for his 1 year old baby sister (not to mention the newest family addition we recently found out about, due to arrive next May!)Very simple story in that all of the (lower case) letters are racing to the top of a coconut tree, once they're all up there the tree becomes top-heavy and - "Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!" - bends from the load, they all come tumbling out, incurring normal childhood-type ailments (skinned-knee, stubbed-toe, loose tooth, out of breath, tangled and knotted up, looped, stooped and "twisted alley-oop", etc.) The parents, aunts and uncles (capital letters) come to their aid as the tree trunk straightens back up. BUT... when the full moon comes out that night, "A" sneaks out of bed and - as children will do - double dares them all back up to the top of the tree! The book ends with a 2-page spread of all of the letters, upper and lower case next to each other - a terrific tool to help youngsters recognize both forms, and part of the fun are the rhymes and fun tongue-twister expressions interspersed throughout (i.e. Skit skat skoodle doot/Flip flop flee.) Super cute little book! You can probably imagine that - having babysat for three of my four grandchildren for 7 years prior to my daughter-in-law becoming a stay-at-home-mom - we have MANY board books included in the large children's library we've built for them over those years - typically, if they're board book versions of a previously released book, they're greatly ABRIDGED versions. I have to say that not only is this one of the highest quality-constructed board books we've purchased, but at 36 pages long (as compared to the hardcover's 40 pages), I think we've actually got most of the entire original book! (Obvious difference would be its size - this is @ 5-1/2" x 7" and a full 3/4" thick, while the hardcover's description lists it as 8.2 x .4 x 10.9.) And what a deal! We purchased this on Amazon for below its imprinted $7.99 US price, and are so pleased with what we received for our dollars - nice, thick pages, bright and eye-catching colors - even our 5-1/2 and 9-1/2 year old grandsons have gotten a kick out of reading this to the little ones!Must have book Love this book. I was a kindergarten teacher and never saw it and wish I had. My 2 1/2 year old grandson loves it and so do I. He now knows his letter names upper and lower case which amazes me. We got it from the library and I had to buy our own copy. This will be bought for all the children in my life.
