Each hour, 75 women are raped in the United States, and every few seconds, a woman is beaten. Each day, 400 Americans suffer shooting injuries, and another 1,100 face criminals armed with guns. Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. The book teaches how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The case studies are gripping and suspenseful, and include tactics for dealing with similar situations. People don't just "snap" and become violent, says de Becker, whose clients include federal government agencies, celebrities, police departments, and shelters for battered women. "There is a process as observable, and often as predictable, as water coming to a boil." Learning to predict violence is the cornerstone to preventing it. De Becker is a master of the psychology of violence, and his advice may save your life. --Joan Price Gavin de Becker : Your question contains much of the answer: today’s world, "where terror and tragedy seem omnipresent..." The key word is "seem." When TV news coverage presents so much on these topics, it elevates the perception of terrorism and tragedy way beyond the reality. In every major city, TV news creates forty hours of original production every day, most of it composed and presented to get our attention with fear. Hence an incident on an airplane in which a man fails to do any damage is treated as if the make-shift bomb actually exploded. It didn’t. Imagine having a near miss in your car, avoiding what would have been a serious collision--and then talking about every hour for months after the fact. Welcome to TV news.To the second part of your question, No, the world is not a more violent place than it has ever been, however we live as if it were. The U.S. is the most powerful nation in world history--and also the most afraid. Question: Your bestselling book The Gift of Fear gives many examples to help readers recognize what you call pre-incident indicators (PINS) of violence. What role does intuition play in recognizing these signals?Gavin de Becker: Like every creature on earth, we have an extraordinary defense resource: We don’t have the sharpest claws and strongest jaws--but we do have the biggest brains, and intuition is the most impressive process of these brains. It might be hard to accept its importance because intuition is often described as emotional, unreasonable, or inexplicable. Husbands chide their wives about "feminine intuition" and don’t take it seriously. If intuition is used by a woman to explain some choice she made or a concern she can’t let go of, men roll their eyes and write it off. We much prefer logic, the grounded, explainable, unemotional thought process that ends in a supportable conclusion. In fact, Americans worship logic, even when it’s wrong, and deny intuition, even when it’s right. Men, of course, have their own version of intuition, not so light and inconsequential, they tell themselves, as that feminine stuff. Theirs is more viscerally named a "gut feeling," but whatever name we use, it isn’t just a feeling. It is a process more extraordinary and ultimately more logical in the natural order than the most fantastic computer calculation. It is our most complex cognitive process and, at the same time, the simplest.Intuition connects us to the natural world and to our nature. It carries us to predictions we will later marvel at. "Somehow I knew," we will say about the chance meeting we predicted, or about the unexpected phone call from a distant friend, or the unlikely turnaround in someone’s behavior, or about the violence we steered clear of, or, too often, the violence we elected not to steer clear of. The Gift of Fear offers strategies that help us recognize the signals of intuition--and helps us avoid denial, which is the enemy of safety. Question: Your latest book, Just 2 Seconds, has been called a "masterpiece" of analysis on the art of preventing assassination. It contains an entire compendium of attacks on protected persons across the globe. What motivated you to put together such a definitive reference? What tenets can be applied to one’s everyday life?Gavin de Becker: Most of all, we wrote the book we needed. My co-authors and I had long looked for an extensive collection of attack summaries from which important new insights could be harvested. Unable to find it, we committed to do the work ourselves, eventually collecting more than 1400 cases to analyze. Many new insights and concepts emerged from the study, and the one most applicable to day to day life, even for people who are not living with unusual risks, is to be in the present; pre-sent, as it were. Now is the only time anything ever happens--now is where the action is. All focus on anything outside the Now (the past, memory, the future, fantasy) detracts focus from what’s actually happening in your environment. Human being have the capacity to look right at something and not see it, and in studying such a crisp event--the few seconds during which assassinations have occurred--Just 2 Seconds aims to enhance the reader’s ability to see the value of the present moment.(Photo © Avery Helm)"A how-to book that reads like a thriller...provocative...empowering."—The Boston Globe"De Becker has a lot to say about crime and the fear of crime, and he says it persuasively...his blend of empathy, reassurance and common sense wows readers."—Newsweek"Chilling and fascinating."—Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Nine

True fear is a gift. Unwarranted fear is a curse. Learn how to tell the difference.

A date won't take "no" for an answer. The new nanny gives a mother an uneasy feeling. A stranger in a deserted parking lot offers unsolicited help. The threat of violence surrounds us every day. But we can protect ourselves, by learning to trust—and act on—our gut instincts.

In this empowering book, Gavin de Becker, the man Oprah Winfrey calls the nation's leading expert on violent behavior, shows you how to spot even subtle signs of danger—before it's too late. Shattering the myth that most violent acts are unpredictable, de Becker, whose clients include top Hollywood stars and government agencies, offers specific ways to protect yourself and those you love, including...how to act when approached by a stranger...when you should fear someone close to you...what to do if you are being stalked...how to uncover the source of anonymous threats or phone calls...the biggest mistake you can make with a threatening person...and more. Learn to spot the danger signals others miss. It might just save your life.

Thank you Gavin Dr Becker for the Gift of Fear I am giving this book a five star rating because this book should be required reading in every American high school. De Becker's book has received criticism for gender bias in highlighting gender-based behavior that puts females at a substantially higher risk of harm. It is true that de Becker describes feminine behaviors, attitudes and actions that are culturally ingrained and reinforced in girls from childhood. Rather than look away, he makes it clear that women need to analyze their behavior and listen to gut feelings. In dangerous situations a woman's social conditioning can stifle that small inner voice of fear. You can't always be "nice". Through-out the book, de Becker provides unique insights into the unsavory aspects of American society that we ignore at our peril. He describes the toxic effects of media culture and celebrity based on decades of real life case-work. De Becker shows us the consequence of America's love affair with guns and the consequences of our collective apathy and negligence. He provides no-nonsense solutions that could save the lives of many, many children. De Becker has looked into the abyss for us with courage and compassion. I will be passing this book around to all the important women in my life.Everyone, especially women, should read this book and learn to trust the power of your intuition I spent 20 years on the streets in local law enforcement. I always felt that the Temporary Restraining Orders (TRO) we served on stalkers and spousal abusers were as worthless, in most cases, as the paper they were written on. Usually they simply served as a salve to sooth our justice system's guilt over unwillingness or inability to take strong and immediate action, or develop alternative solutions. As Gavin de Becker so aptly points out, when it comes to committed stalkers and abusers, not only are they not afraid of a piece of paper, it incents them to even a higher degree of activity and perhaps violence. The author makes an excellent case that we should be much more judicious in evaluating such cases against a threat matrix and respond in different ways depending on the nature of the threat.I also greatly appreciate the author's discussion of the origins of fear and how important it has been in allowing mankind to develop. In addition to the twenty years I spent in law enforcement, I am also a Certified Body Language trainer and teach the power of nonverbal communication. As research has shown, what we call women's intuition is in reality the fact that women, on average, are far better at picking up nonverbal cues than men. That "intuition" was absolutely essential for the females of our species to survive in a very hostile world, where they were of slighter stature and needed to quickly detect threats around them. As the primary caregiver to children they also needed to be able to effectively interpret the cues and needs of infants and small children before spoken language. One interesting study involved showing short film clips with the sound turned off to groups of men and women. Women scored an incredible 87% accuracy in evaluating the situation shown in the video. Afraid guys we only scored 42%. fMRI scans reveal women use 14-16 regions of their brains during communication, while men only 4-6 areas (most women probably would dispute giving us that much credit-:)In modern society, in the interest of being "polite", we often suppress our natural intuition, our gut feelings. Back in my police career we didn't even have a term called Body Language. We only knew it as "street-smarts". One of my great fears has to do with my beautiful wife's suppression of her natural intuition around strangers, in the interest of being polite and non-judgemental. The nature of my our respective careers requires us to live in a dense urban area, surrounded by all sorts of threats. Dark parking lots, underground garages, elevators and streets filled with street people and drug addicts. While our building is very secure, once you are on the streets it's a whole different ball game. She has terrific intuition when she uses it. She is like a perfectly honed tuning fork when she is willing to trust her intuition, but due to her kind and trusting nature, she often suppresses it in the interest of being all-inclusive and accepting.Gavin de Becker's loud message to women, Trust your gut, Don't suppress your intuition, Don't worry about hurting some stranger's feelings is a powerful one. It is my hope that my wife and every woman will be willing to read the book, reflect on all the powerful stories in The Gift of Fear, including the author's personal story.Niceness Does Not Equal Goodness This book is an invaluable resource for women. The 4th chapter by itself is worth the price of the book alone. Titled "Survival Signals" this chapter will teach you the sophisticated manipulations that criminal predators use to try and gain control over you.You will learn about: "forced teaming"- establishing premature trust based on sharing a predicament. "charm and niceness" (remember, niceness does not equal goodness.) "too many details"- When people lie what they say doesn't sound credible to them so they keep talking. "typecasting"- Involves a slight insult to get the woman to respond by engaging verbally with the crim-pred. "loan sharking"- (it's hard to tell a creep to eff off when he's done something helpful and now you are indebted to him.) "discounting of the word NO"- refusal to respect the word no is a signal a crim-pred is trying to control you or refusing to relinquish control. There is much more detail in this chapter, and I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to recognize these "interviewing techniques" that criminal predators use. Thank you Gavin de Becker for writing such an important and informational book.

Good guide for the vacationing naturalist. I borrowed this book from my sister the last time we went to the southwest on vacation, and it’s a nice, compact field guide to the plants and animals of the southwest deserts. So I bought one to toss into my backpack, since I wander around being a biology nerd on vacations, and we are going again this fall.Great little book to have in hand if you just have to know what lizard that was sleeping in your boot, or what cactus you just sat on.Answered all my wife's questions! We just moved to Colorado from the east coast. My wife is a plant and wildlife aficionado and was frustrated that she was seeing things out here that we never saw on the east coast - and couldn't identify them. (Great move, BTW, will never go back east!) I bought her this book so she could quit asking me what the heck this or that was. ;-) Worth every penny. Besides that, it's well constructed and durable. Bright, clear photos.Birds and more.... Spending the winter months in AZ and wanted a bird book to help identify some of the many species down here. This book is more than just a 'bird' book - I also found a great preserve in Nevada, has help with tracking common animals in the SW, has pictures & descriptions of many cactus and other flora & fauna. Well worth the price - lots of information.

Title: The Thinnest Air Pdf

A woman’s disappearance exposes a life of secrets in a twisting novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Memory Watcher.

Meredith Price is the luckiest woman alive. Her husband, Andrew, is a charming and successful financial broker. She has two lovely stepchildren and is living in affluence in a mountain resort town. After three years of marriage, Meredith’s life has become predictable. Until the day she disappears.

Her car has been discovered in a grocery store parking lot—purse and phone undisturbed on the passenger seat, keys in the ignition, no sign of struggle, and no evidence of foul play. It’s as if she vanished into thin air.

It’s not like Meredith to simply abandon her loved ones. And no one in this town would have reason to harm her. When her desperate sister, Greer, arrives, she must face a disturbing question: What if no one really knows Meredith at all? For Greer, finding her sister isn’t going to be easy…because where she’s looking is going to get very, very dark.

THE THiNNEST AIR My First Read pick for June, and this one I did not agonize over- it just seemed right. I love psychological suspense thrillers, and this one is all that. Meredith and Greer, half sisters with an unbreakable bond, one goes missing, the other jumps into action to find out what happened to her. There are a lot of twists and turns, going back and forth between the main characters for several months before Meredith goes missing. It is an interesting story with a surprising ending. Enjoyable book, well worth the read.Entertaining story, but a bit generic and predictable This tale revolves around a young wealthy housewife who suddenly disappears from a supermarket parking lot and the frantic search that ensues. The story is told in alternating POV's between two characters, the missing woman Meredith and her older sister Greer. Clues to Meredith’s disappearance are dropped like breadcrumbs as each individual shares their story of the events surrounding the mysterious disappearance. The POV narratives time jump, alternating between Meredith’s pre-missing POV and Greer’s post-missing POV. In this story, everyone’s a suspect as numerous secrets are revealed indicating that some of the people who knew Meredith may not be as guilt-free as they appear. The revelations also prove that even those closest to her may not have known as much about Meredith as they believed. The story was solid and entertaining but not groundbreaking enough to really wow me. Many of the twists were too predictable and I correctly figured out what would eventually become the biggest reveal shortly into the story. However, I was most disappointed with the ending. I don’t know if a certain aspect of the ending was left purposely vague but it left me feeling a bit cheated and makes me wonder if a sequel is in the works. Also, there were several plot devices inserted to help boost the sense of mystery but some were orphaned, leaving behind unresolved plot holes. Others were just a bit too unbelievable. Overall, it was an entertaining read but a bit generic. With the sheer number of stories out there about a woman who mysteriously goes missing prompting a close friend or relative to play gumshoe detective, it takes a very special story to set it apart from the pack. This was fun and entertaining but not special. I likely would have rated it four stars if not for the disappointing ending.A counterbalance to that one star review. Started reading this right away based on that one star 'first line' review. I thought, surely it can't be THAT bad. And it wasn't. It was a good first line, and anyone who claims they're not a prude but can't handle writing about sex that occurs while on honeymoon is lying to both themselves and us. I'll update with an actual review one of these days, but I thought that review needed a counterbalance.

They say timing is everything Timing is everything. When Henna meets Bodhi their timing is all off. Their random ride share at Coachella has Henna instantly smitten and Bodhi giving in to his curiosity about this girl. Concerts don't last forever and they go their separate ways.Starting her senior year of high school at age 19 due to an extended recovery from a life changing accident, Henna is resigned to just get the year over with and graduate, until she meets the new guidance counselor. Timing is everything.I wasn't sure I was going to like Henna's character. She seemed like a flippant pothead at first, lol, but the more I learned about her the more I liked her. She's a free spirit who leads with her heart more than her head, but it works for her. Bodhi was a character I was immediately drawn to because he was broken, broken by the results of his own actions and choices, and he was living with the repercussions of that every single day. Their love is intense and pure and soul deep, but timing is everything. The supporting characters were all pivotal and the moral choices and dilemmas involved made me pause and really think about the situations at hand. This had more angst than I anticipated (fist pump) and my eyes leaked more than once. I loved it.Love, sacrifice and life lessons 4.5 stars. In typical Jewel Ann style, right off the bat there's a heroine who is bold and sassy with a bit of a reckless or rebellious attitude. Henna Lane doesn't sweat the small stuff after surviving an experience that taught her to live her life to the fullest. She's all about adventure and exploration as well as giving into a good time. Bodhi comes along like an unassuming surfer cowboy with rock band musical tastes and it's like an instant electric zap to Henna. Their exchanges were really cute and flirty with an undertone of sweet. Henna comes on really strong and although Bodhi doesn't seem to mind, he's already noticing there's some stark differences between he and Henna, but welcomes the reprieve from his daily life that she provides for him.I wouldn't say this was an overly angsty story like some of Jewel Ann's other books, although there are some moments that are ulcer inducing. There are moral dilemmas woven throughout the plot that gave me pause as to what was the right thing to do. That was already enough to give me some reader anxiety about where this story was going to go and when Henna or Bodhi would make the wrong decisions. But is it wrong when it's born out of love for another person? Henna, for all of her vibrant youthfulness, is in fact young, but there are moments when her maturity speaks volumes over her actual age. As for Bodhi, he is mature, but he's also very burdened by a past that he can't let go of because it affects him in the present. My heart squeezed hard for him and what he was dealing with. As humans, it's impossible to make the right decision the first time every time. But what matters is righting the wrongs afterwards and learning the lesson to be a better person to avoid such costly mistakes again.I really loved Bodhi and Henna’s relationship although I was a little slower than them to catch up with their intense level of chemistry, it was like a jump off the diving board into the abyss with no hope of return when read from Henna's POV. I adored Bodhi, he's the tender hearted conflicted hero whose personal wants war with his responsibilities. Yet he can't help but want what Henna has to offer. There's a sensitive issue towards the end that really highlighted how people have differing opinions on what is the right thing to do and puts relationships to the test, because ultimately, it is selfish on each party's behalf, and that a person in a position with very little choices still wants to make their own final choice. I appreciated how this section was portrayed and my favorite part was everything that came afterward. There was no way I could have predicted how this story was going to go based on the blurb so the surprises revealed kept me engrossed and the character journey was inspiring.Enjoyable read Jewel E Ann gave me three five star books last year and I was really looking foward to reading this one. I must admit I did find the first half hard going and I had that "meh " feeling throughout, however the last fifty percent really kept my attention and prevented that DNF. I am glad I persevered and finished but I have to be honest and say if it wasn't Jewel E Ann I probably would have given up.I would have loved to have learned more about what happened to Henna to make her the way she was, her highs and lows after her accident, I feel this may have ingratiated her more to me in the beginning as I just couldn't connect to her in the beginning. The insta-love didn't convince me at all unfortunately, however, I was championing this couple by the end.So while this wasn't a winner, winner I still enjoyed it at the end. Jewel E Ann tackles some hard subjects that make you think and loved the honesty with which they were dealt. I will say I seem to be in the minority and this may work for you, many of my friends have loved it.“Love is not a rational emotion. It jumps out of planes and dives off cliffs. It leaves a permanent mark on everything it touches. I can do the right thing or I can love you, but I can’t do both.”
